DAY 1 • JULY 16
Maarten and Jinte have known each other since they were teenagers when they were street performers, sometimes even competing against each other. At one point they realized that sometimes “one plus one makes three.” Their newfound alliance led them into a vortex of musical adventures. In their search for making flawless pop music, the duo formed Balthazar, and released their debut album in 2010 entitled “Applause”. Following the release of Applause, they toured in Europe: in the United Kingdom and France playing for dEus, and also in Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Sweden, Norway, and Denmark.
In 2012, a pivotal moment: the release of their album “Rats”, an album that was able to highlight Balthazar’s love for classic pop.
On 31 March 2015, another important moment for the band: the release of “Thin Walls”. Unlike previous albums, the last album was written while the quintet was on tour and the ten tracks that make up the album are the most spontaneous songs the band has ever created. In addition, this is the first recording that has not been entirely produced by the band itself, but instead was produced with the help of Ben Hillier (Blur, Depeche Mode, Elbow) and Jason Cox (Massive Attack, Gorillaz) in the Yellow Fish Studio in Lewes, UK.
Their first single from “Thin Walls” titled “Then What” – is about a desperate love story in which one’s own happiness depends on another person. This story immediately sets the tone of the album, and each song is like a like small fresco depicting life. It is clear that “Thin Walls” brings Balthazar into new musical horizons.
